Sleepers in Scraptoft

The Brief;

  • Low Maintenance

  • Tackle the huge slope

  • Raised Beds

A new build home with a quite frankly, unusable garden. A large slope from the top of the garden, down toward to house, perfect for sledging but not much else. The brief was to make it into a garden, and keep it low maintenance. We decided the only way to tackle the huge height difference was to split the garden into two levels. We achieved this by using sleepers to retain the sides and the split level. Using sleepers had a double use as a retainer, and we were also able to use them as planters, allowing for tall planting such as bamboo for privacy from the surrounding houses. The client wanted a dark paving, and so we used a back multi-sized sandstone for the paving. Other important elements included in the garden were the drainage and lighting. The lighting was used to light the steps, for safety, and we chose to use uplighters for the planting beds, and a light underneath the bench for atmosphere.
